Setting up private nameservers in whm and cpanel

Today, we’re sharing our tips on setting up private nameservers in whm and cpanel. This will help you to create your own branded nameservers if you have purchased reseller hosting.

Requirements for setting up private nameservers in whm and cpanel

  1. Reseller Hosting with Web Host Manager (WHM)
  2. Access to Registered Domain’s Panel

Step by Step procedure for setting up private nameservers in whm and cpanel

Part 1:

  • First of All, login to your domain Control Panel. For the shake of this tutorial, we are using Godaddy’s Domain Control Panel.
    • Login to Godaddy My Account Section
    • Click on Domain Tab to expand
    • Click on Manage DNS button corresponding to your domain name.
  • Click on Manage Host Names (bottom of the screen)
  • Click on Add Hostname
  • Enter Hostname (like NS1, NS2)
  • Enter their IP Address (your IP Address given by Hosting Company)
  • Click on Add.
  • Repeat the step for another hostname

Part 2:

  • Now login to your Web Host Manager by using adding /whm with your domain name. For e.g. https://example.com/whm
  • How to Edit DNS Zone:
    • Click on Edit DNS Zone under DNS Function
    • Select the Domain Name & click on Edit
    • Change the following values
      • SOA     –      ns1.example.com.
      • NS        –      ns1.example.com.
      • NS        –      ns2.example.com.
    • Click on Save
  • How to Add DNS Zone:
    • Click on Add DNS Zone under DNS Function
    • Give the IP Address and domain as the following
      • IP Address  :  your IP Address given by Hosting Company
      • Domain : NS1.example.com
    • Click on Add Zone
    • Repeat the steps to add another DNS Zone for
      • IP Address : your IP Address given by Hosting Company
      • Domain : NS2.example.com
    • Click on Add Zone
  • Now main process has been done
  • You can set the default nameservers for accounts created under your WHM by using following steps
    • Click on Basic cPanel & WHM Setup under Server Configuration
    • Enter your nameservers & click on save changes.
  • Try entering nameservers for any domain hosted under your WHM to check the above settings are working correctly.
